Southern Region Angling Club (SORAC)

The History of SORAC

Formed in 2003, the Southern Region Angling Club (SoRAC) holds most of it's competitions at Chikwawa and Matope, both of which are venues on the Shire River .

SoRAC members pride themselves on their river angling, but do not limit themselves to the river. SoRAC members often join the Lilongwe and Districts Angling Club (LADAC) members at the lake for club and international competitions, social fishing and fun, and can, therefore hold their own against the top “ Lake Anglers ”!

SoRAC has built a small clubhouse (complete with new ablution block) on the banks of the Shire River in Chikwawa where weigh-in is held and many a beverage consumed!

The river anglers are particularly fond of hooking Tiger fish which, although not a large as those found in the Cahorra-Bassa and Kariba Dams, put up an adrenaline rushing fight to the very end. Another of the “favourites” to be caught is the Vundu, a large and cumbersome but extremely strong fish which anglers aim to keep out of the reeds when hooked, although that's not as easy as it sounds! Other fish species caught on the river are Chessa, Squeaker, Barbel, and many more.

In a competition fish are required to be of a certain size and only a limited number of fish per specie may be weighed in. This has been done in the name of fish preservation.
